What is AI?

Defined in 1955 by Stanford Professor John McCarthy, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines”. An ambitious area of computer science dedicated to making computers more like us. In recent years, the definition has been narrowed to reflect the real-world application of AI technologies “the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages'' - Oxford Dictionaries

Artificial General Intelligence

Commonly known as ‘Strong AI’, AGI is a powerful vision often seen in science fiction movies and novels. We are yet to create AGI, a technology that can learn and apply its intelligence to solve any problem. The idea is an AGI would be able to act in a way indistinguishable from a human, possibly achieving a level of consciousness.

Artificial Super Intelligence

Also found in popular science fiction, ASI takes the idea of artificial intelligence to its extreme. A hypothetical self-aware machine that will surpass human intelligence in all forms. An interesting thought experiment, it’s hard to comprehend the extent of this intelligence and it’s impact. The possibility of achieving ASI is disputed.

How is it applied?

While the field of Artificial Intelligence is broad, there are key considerations that exist regardless of use case. A good example is scale. Scale of interaction or data is a prerequisite in getting value out of these technologies. Another key question is what makes your business, product, or service different? As an example, Intelligent Classification and Routing can capture customer enquiries, which can be via voice, digital (e.g., chat, email, messaging), or social (e.g. Twitter, Facebook) channels. It then applies Natural Language Understanding to automatically route the inquiry to the right person or system based on your customer's intent, context and keywords.
